DNC - Michael Rendon Day in the Life

Michael Rendon

Michael Rendon - Democratic City CouncilmanRendon, 35, a Democrat and a native Coloradan, has lived in La Plata County for 15 years and currently serves as an engaged member of the Durango City Council. Rendon, who previously was the Director of the Fort Lewis College Environmental Center, loves the outdoor opportunities Durango provides and is moved by the rugged people (both past and present) of the Animas Valley.

Rendon currently sits on the Affordable Housing Board of Directors where he is trying to pass Durango's first Affordable Housing Policy. Rendon instigated the solar hot water system going on top of the Rec center this summer, and has been actively pushing for a "buy local" program for the city of Durango. Rendon plays violin with his Gypsy band, Carute Roma and often plays in local festivals and fundraisers.

Take in the best of Durango:
To experience some of the highlights of our area, Michael has given some of his favorite suggestions below.

Day 1: An avid international traveler, Rendon has literally been around the world, and still believes that nothing compares to the San Juan National Forest and he suggests that outdoor adventurers take in a couple of the magnificent hikes in our area. After a beautiful trip to Durango by flight or drive and once you have settled into one of our many comfortable lodging options, head into the Historic Downtown area, grab a cup of coffee or tea at one of our local coffee shops and then to Maria’s Bookshop (between 9th and 10th on Main), one of the premier locally owned bookshops in the nation. Michael Rendon - Democratic City Counselor Pick up a good trail guide that includes one of Michael’s favorite hikes – for the longer, more strenuous day hike, take on Engineer Mountain or for an easier hike to fit all levels, the Colorado Trail finishes right in our backyard and is beautiful year round.

If you are looking for a chance to drive over the San Juan Skyway and the opportunity to take in a strenuous but magnificent hike, take on Ice Lakes in Silverton. Michael highly suggests stopping in Silverton, before or after (probably after) your hike, to scarf one of Mad Momma’s Pies, and we couldn’t get Michael to commit to a favorite because they are all so good.

After all that hiking and a killer pie, stop at Trimble Hot Springs for a soak, and because you hiked so hard, treat yourself to a massage. After your soak and spa, head back into downtown and enjoy one of Michael’s favorite places for dinner, Ken and Sue’s Restaurant or the Cyprus Café that uses natural meats and local veggies when available. While you're out, don’t forget to sample some of our local micro-brews – Michael likes the dark brews including Carver’s Stout and the Ska Brewing Company’s Ten-Pin Porter and Steel-Toe Stout. Round off the evening with a trip to the Diamond Belle Saloon for a nightcap or to the El Rancho Tavern for an authentic Durango nightlife experience.

Day 2: As an advocate for buying local and eating local, Michael highly suggests checking out the Durango Farmers Market. Enjoy a fun atmosphere with live music/entertainment, great local foods and local goods and services and more. The farmers market is held every Saturday during the summer months from 8am to Noon – and don’t forget a tasty tamale from Cocina Linda’s. Mesa Verde National Park Save time to soak in some of the unique trips and tours that make the Four Corners so special.

For a scenic adventure, take the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge or a high altitude Jeep/Hummer tour and for a more wet and wild adventure, the Animas has fantastic rafting for all levels and gold medal fly-fishing. If you are after a cultural experience, visit one of the areas cultural gems. The Four Corners is home to two different World Heritage Sites: Mesa Verde National Park and Chaco Canyon.
